Apgar's 1953 paper is displayed below. Scroll down to the third paragraph, where it is stated that infants may become apneic for many minutes after the first breath, and that a satisfactory cry is sometimes not established even when the infant leaves the delivery room! We need to ask why the umbilical cord should ever be cut before a satisfactory cry is established. |
